Some 2,200 years ago, Xu Fu — a retainer of the first emperor of Qin — is said to have set out by imperial order in search of the elixir of immortality, and to have drifted ashore here at Niizaki. This shrine enshrines him as its tutelary deity and is venerated for safety at sea and for fishing. The setting is striking: black rock formations ring the shrine entirely, and due east lie the two islands of Kanmurijima and Kutsujima, said to embody Xu Fu's thought — a genuinely grand view.
