The Kyoto National Museum preserves, researches and exhibits both its own collection and objects deposited with it by temples and shrines. The red-brick Meiji Kotokan, a substantial piece of Meiji architecture and an Important Cultural Property, is currently closed to exhibition while seismic isolation work goes ahead. The Heisei Chishinkan, opened in 2014, draws on a combined holding of roughly 14,000 items to show painting, calligraphy, sculpture, archaeological material and craft in its masterpieces gallery, and hosts special exhibitions alongside.
