Kuhonji Temple
📍 KyotoKuhonji was founded in 1079 by Kakugyo Hosshinno, a son of Emperor Shirakawa and third abbot of Ninnaji. The seven main halls burned during the wars of the Sengoku period, but the Nio gate alone escaped. It is a two-storey gate of three bays with a single opening, irimoya-roofed and clad in cypress bark, and is designated an Important Cultural Property as an outstanding piece of Kamakura-period building. The temple itself is also said to have been established by Kukai in 810.
