Kitanotenmangu

Kitano Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, revered as the god of learning, and is the head shrine of roughly 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjin shrines across Japan. On the 25th of every month a flea market and around a thousand stalls fill the grounds, and kagura is danced at the shrine on the same day. The treasure hall, built in 1927, blended Japanese and Western construction using the best technique available at the time; inside are the National Treasure Kitano Tenjin scrolls, an Important Cultural Property votive plaque painted by Hasegawa Tohaku, and an inkstone said to have been Michizane's own — a thousand years of Tenjin devotion in one room.
