Horinji Temple

Horinji stands on the slope of Arashiyama, a Shingon temple best known for the Jusan-mairi: from 13 March to 13 May, boys and girls who have reached thirteen by the traditional count come here to receive wisdom and good fortune. Custom holds that if you look back before you have finished crossing Togetsukyo bridge on the way home, the wisdom you were given is lost — so keep your eyes forward on the bridge. The grounds also hold a needle mound and memorial pagoda, and a memorial service for worn-out needles is held each 8 December.
