Hiedanojinja Shrine

Hiedano Shrine is said to have been founded in 709 and enshrines the gods of clothing, food and shelter. It is also known as a protector of women, and many women come to pray here. The Saeki lantern festival, held each 14 August, has continued as a farmers' festival praying for good harvests ever since a lantern was granted to the shrine from the Seiryoden of the Kyoto palace in 859, and it is designated a national intangible folk cultural property. An oak in the grounds with a large burl on its trunk is venerated as a tree that wards off cancer.
