Gion District

Gion District

📍 Kyoto

A traditional entertainment district that grew up in front of Yasaka Shrine, Gion is one of the few places where geiko (Kyoto's geisha) and maiko apprentices still work today. Hanamikoji-dori, lined with wooden teahouses and lattice windows, is its signature street. You might spot a maiko at dusk heading to an appointment — remember she's a working artisan, so mind your photo manners.
