At Fusaiji the grounds, enclosed by the main hall, the kitchen quarters and the gate, sit in deep quiet shade, and the temple has a strongly Zen character. Temple tradition says Ashikaga Tadayoshi built it for a daughter of Ashikaga Motouji; another account credits Ashikaga Takauji with founding it in 1357 with Muso Kokushi as founding priest. The Kannon hall, an Important Cultural Property, is a fine example of the Zen architectural style, and its grave beauty is reckoned among the best in the prefecture.
