Fukutokuji Temple

Fukutokuji is said to have been founded in 711 by the monk Gyoki at the command of Emperor Shomu, and to have been called Yugedera at the time. In 1579, when Akechi Mitsuhide built Shuzan Castle, the temple was pulled down and its timber used for the castle, and it ceased to exist. The buildings standing today were raised anew in the Edo period. Its storehouse holds a seated wooden Yakushi Nyorai of the Fujiwara period along with standing figures of Jikokuten and Zochoten, all Important Cultural Properties. They can be viewed if you contact the temple in advance, so arrange it before you go.
