Fujinomorijinja Shrine

Fujinomori Shrine has been the tutelary shrine of the Fukakusa district since early times. Behind the main hall stand the Taishogun and Hachiman halls, said to have been built by Ashikaga Yoshinori — both in nagare-zukuri style under cypress-bark roofs, both Important Cultural Properties. East of the main hall is a mound where Empress Jingu, credited with founding the shrine, is said to have buried her banners on returning from campaign. At the festival on 5 May, in keeping with the shrine's claim as birthplace of the Boys' Day observance, there is a warrior procession and a display of trick horsemanship. The grounds hold a hydrangea garden of some 3,500 plants, open from early June to early July.
