Enkoji Temple

Enkoji began when Tokugawa Ieyasu, wanting to advance learning across the country, summoned Sanyo Genkitsu — ninth head of the Ashikaga School — and gave him a school at Fushimi along with wooden movable type to print books. The surviving type is the oldest in Japan and is designated an Important Cultural Property. In front of the main hall a suikinkutsu returns its odd, chiming note, and the garden is at its best in fresh spring green and in autumn colour.
