Daikakuji Temple
📍 KyotoDaikakuji's full name records what it once was: the great head temple of the former Saga imperial residence. It was built in the Heian period as a detached palace for Emperor Saga. Covered corridors link the halls, and the sliding doors of the Shinden carry paintings by Kano Sanraku including his peonies and red plum. Cherry blossom in spring and maples in autumn bring the crowds, and the moon-viewing evening held at the mid-autumn festival is well known. Sutra copying is accepted from 9am to 3:30pm and takes about an hour.
