Chogenji Temple

📍 Kyoto

Chogenji is a Rinzai Zen temple. Prince Koretaka, son of Emperor Montoku, is said to have enshrined a Kannon here and, on leaving the district, to have passed on to the villagers a secret method for warding off cancer as a parting gift. At the Kannon festival held on the first Sunday of July, prayers against cancer are offered and visitors are served the cancer-warding tea and flowing somen noodles; the temple fills with people come to make their wish.
