Agatajinja Shrine

Agatajinja Shrine

📍 Kyoto

Just south of Byodoin, Agata Shrine enshrines Konohanasakuya-hime and is well known as a deity of marriage ties and safe childbirth. Its festival on 5 June each year fills the surrounding streets with stalls from midday and draws crowds of over a hundred thousand. The climax, the procession of the bonten, takes place late that night with every light in the area extinguished — which has earned it a second name, the strange festival of the dark night.

📸 Best photo spotShoot straight through the torii gate to capture the shrine's signature red color and sense of depth.
