Jeongui Eupseong (Town Wall)

Jeongui Eupseong is a Joseon-era town wall in Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo.

The wall originally stood in what is now Goseong-ri, Seongsan-eup. But its proximity to Udo Island meant that drum and horn sounds could be heard there at dawn and night, and the area suffered repeated crop failures from typhoons, as well as raids by Japanese pirates. For these reasons, in September 1423, the 5th year of King Sejong's reign, the regional commander Jeong Gan relocated and rebuilt the wall at Jinsa-ri, now part of Pyoseon-myeon.

At the time, the wall measured 2,520 cheok in circumference and 13 cheok high, with gates on the east, west, and south sides. Today it survives as the wall surrounding Seongeup Folk Village, and visiting both together offers a fuller sense of Joseon-era regional governance on Jeju.
