Jangsan Seowon

Jangsan Seowon in Gyeongju was founded in 1780, the 4th year of King Jeongjo's reign, by local Confucian scholars acting on shared consensus, in Suseong-ri, Imgo-myeon, Yeongcheon County of Gyeongsang-do, to honor the scholarship and virtue of Yi Jeon-in, and enshrined his memorial tablet.

Yi Jeon-in was born the illegitimate son of Yi Eon-jeok, pen name Hoejae, a leading Neo-Confucian scholar of mid-Joseon. Deeply devoted to his father, he accompanied him into exile in Ganggye after Yi Eon-jeok was implicated in the Jeongmi literati purge, tending to him throughout, and worked tirelessly to make his father's scholarship and legacy known to the world. Jangsan Seowon served the dual role of honoring past scholars and providing local education, until it was torn down in 1868, the 5th year of King Gojong's reign, under the Daewongun's order to abolish academies.
