Tomb of King Heondeok

Tomb of King Heondeok, on the banks of the Bukcheon stream in Gyeongju, is the tomb of King Heondeok (r. 809-826), Silla's 41st monarch.

Born Kim Eon-seung, he took the throne after killing his nephew, King Aejang. During his reign he encouraged agriculture and maintained close ties with Tang China, though domestic affairs remained turbulent, marked by the successive rebellions of Kim Heon-chang and Kim Beom-mun. According to the Samguk Sagi, when the king died in 826 he was buried north of a temple called Cheollimsa, though the exact location of that temple remains unknown to this day. This tomb carries the full weight of an era ruled by a king who seized the throne through usurpation, only to govern through a string of rebellions.
