Dangu Seowon

Dangu Seowon

📍 Gyeongju

Dangu Seowon primarily honors Yi Se-gi, with his son Yi Cheon and descendant Yi Jong-yun enshrined alongside him.

Yi Se-gi was a distinguished official skilled in literary composition during King Chungnyeol's reign of Goryeo, holding posts including deputy director of the Secret Council and chief of the Office of Special Advisers. Yi Cheon, his eldest son, placed first in the national civil service exam in 1299, the 25th year of King Chungnyeol's reign. The academy began as Mohyeon Seodang, built in 1862, the 13th year of King Cheoljong's reign, to honor Yi Jong-yun; it was torn down in 1868, the 5th year of King Gojong's reign, under Regent Heungseon Daewongun's order to abolish academies, and was refounded under its current name, Dangu Seowon, in 1983.
