Tomb of King Beopheung

Tomb of King Beopheung belongs to King Beopheung (r. 514-540), Silla's 23rd monarch, credited with completing Silla's transformation into a centralized ancient state.

To strengthen royal authority, he established the Sangdaedeung chief-minister post and the Byeongbu military ministry, and promulgated a legal code in 520. In 532, he annexed Geumgwan Gaya, giving Silla its first foothold in the lower Nakdong River region. He was the first Silla king to adopt an independent era name, "Geonwon," and dispatched envoys to the Chinese Liang dynasty. Above all, he's well known for officially recognizing Buddhism as the state religion in 527, following the martyrdom of Yi Cha-don.
