Bangju Church, meaning "Ark Church," was designed by Itami Jun (Yoo Dong-ryong), a Korean-Japanese architect who worked primarily in Japan and Korea, drawing on the motif of Noah's Ark.
Itami Jun pursued an architectural philosophy that embraced the unique climate and character of each site, creating buildings that blend naturally into human life. This church was built on March 16, 2009, using wood and zinc-coated metal.
Its most striking feature is the artificial pool surrounding it, which makes the building appear to float on the water's surface. Though a religious facility, its architectural achievement is significant enough that many visitors come purely to appreciate the building itself, regardless of faith.
