Baedong Samneung (Three Royal Tombs)

Baedong Samneung takes its name from three royal tombs standing side by side, east to west, on the western slope of Mt. Namsan in Gyeongju.

From the bottom, they're said to belong to three kings of the Park clan: Adalla, Silla's 8th monarch; Sindeok, the 53rd; and Gyeongmyeong, the 54th. All three are round earthen mounds. The middle tomb, believed to belong to King Sindeok, was looted in both 1953 and 1963, and the resulting examination of its interior confirmed it as a stone-chamber tomb with a horizontal entrance passage. This unusual arrangement of three royal tombs standing in a row makes this a particularly memorable stop among Silla's many royal tombs.
