Sanbangsan Mountain

Sanbangsan Mountain

📍 Jeju

A dome-shaped volcanic peak rising abruptly from Jeju's flat southwest terrain — this is Sanbangsan Mountain.

Ranked alongside Hallasan and Seongsan Ilchulbong as one of Jeju's three great mountains, it's regarded as a sacred, mystical peak — locals say that when clouds wrap around it, rain is sure to follow. Legend also holds that the Jade Emperor tore a peak off Hallasan and threw it here to form the mountain.

On the mountain's southwestern slope, a cave called Sanbanggul carved deep into the rock face has long served as a place of Buddhist practice for monks, and the view of Yongmeori Coast and the sunset from inside the cave is considered the highlight of any visit.

Honestly, though, the mountain is designated a restricted-access protected natural monument, so climbing to the summit is, in principle, limited to academic or management purposes — general visitors should know beforehand that the visit centers on paying respects at Sanbanggulsa Temple and taking in the view rather than a full hike.

It's close to Yongmeori Coast and the Hendrick Hamel Memorial, making the three easy to combine; hours are 09:00-18:00 (last entry shifts with sunset time), and admission is free.

ℹ️ Travel infoHours 09:00-18:00 (last entry shifts with sunset). Free. Parking available. Tel 064-794-2940.
📸 Best photo spotThe classic shot looks up at the whole mountain from the flat land near Yongmeori Coast — silhouette shots at sunset are striking too.
