Bucheon Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hall

A memorial honoring Pearl S. Buck, the American author who won the Nobel Prize in Literature for "The Good Earth" — this is the Bucheon Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hall.

Buck was a novelist and human-rights advocate who was troubled by the social discrimination faced by mixed-race children born to Korean mothers and American soldiers during the Korean War. After establishing a Korean branch of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation in 1965, she opened the "Sosa Opportunity Center" on this very spot in 1967, caring for roughly 2,000 war orphans and mixed-race children.

Bucheon opened this memorial hall in 2006 on the exact site of the former Sosa Opportunity Center to honor her spirit of human dignity. It's a place to encounter a little-known chapter of Korea-US exchange history — a Nobel laureate who devoted part of her life to Korea's marginalized children.

Honestly, though, it's modest in scale, so a visit takes just 30 minutes to an hour, and since the exhibits lean on text and photographs, some background on Pearl Buck beforehand deepens the experience.

It's officially registered as a cultural facility with the Korea Tourism Organization, and it's a good pick for visitors wanting a quiet, reflective stop.

Hours are 09:30-18:00 (last entry 17:00), closed Mondays, January 1st, and Lunar New Year/Chuseok, with free admission.
