Yamagunijinja Shrine

Yamagunijinja Shrine

📍 Kyoto

Timber for the construction of Heian-kyo was levied from the Yamaguni district, which was accordingly designated as imperial forest to be cut for building; the main hall of Yamaguni Shrine went up in the Hoki era. The shrine stands quietly in its mountain village most of the year, but at the annual festival on the second Sunday of October — the Yamaguni Sakigake Festa — the Yamaguni corps of the Restoration marches in period dress and the place fills up.

📸 Best photo spotShoot straight through the torii gate to capture the shrine's signature red color and sense of depth.
