Ujikamijinja Shrine

The main hall here, a National Treasure, is said to be the oldest surviving shrine building in Japan, dating from the Heian period. It consists of three single-bay nagare-zukuri structures, the two flanking halls large and the central one small. The worship hall, also a National Treasure, is a residential building in the shinden manner, said to be a surviving structure from the Uji detached palace. The shrine was originally one with Uji Shrine below it, and is said to have served as guardian shrine to Byodoin.
