Ujijinja Shrine

Standing along the Uji River, Uji Shrine is said to date from the Heian period; it was formerly called Rikyu Hachimangu. Its deity is Uji no Wakiiratsuko, a son of Emperor Ojin. The three-bay nagare-zukuri main hall, an Important Cultural Property, was built in the Kamakura period, and the shrine also preserves valuable objects including wooden guardian lions and a white okina mask. People come here to pray for progress in their studies.
