Shuchijinja Shrine

Shuchi Shrine is said to have been founded in the reign of Emperor Nintoku on the summit of Nishimine, west of its present site, and moved here in 535. In 793 the deities Daiho Tenno and Shuchi Tenno were enshrined together in one hall. Then in 869 the deity worshipped here — Kanimeikazuchi, known as Gozu Tenno — was transferred to the Kanshin-in at Yasaka in Gion, the institution that became Yasaka Shrine. For that reason this is called the shrine from which Yasaka Shrine descends. The main hall, built in 1612, keeps the bright decorative work characteristic of the Momoyama period and is a registered cultural property of Kyoto Prefecture.
