Shiseki Park

This site is where roof tiles were fired for the construction of Heian-kyo, from the 8th into the first half of the 9th century. Its existence came to light during excavation ahead of housing development, and in 2006 it was designated a National Historic Site as important evidence for how the capital was built. The remains themselves have been reburied for protection, while the site above has been laid out as a park with the kiln positions marked. From the open ground on the west side you look down over the whole kiln site, with the Kyoto basin and the Yodo River valley spread out and the view running from Mount Hiei all the way to Mount Ikoma.
