Setagayadaikanyashiki

The official residence of the Oba family, who served for generations as daikan (magistrates) governing 20 villages of the Hikone domain's Setagaya territory from the mid-Edo period onward — also known as the Oba Daikan Residence. As the only surviving daikan residence of a daimyo territory within Tokyo, it was designated a metropolitan historic site in 1952, and the family's collected historical documents were designated metropolitan cultural properties at the same time. The surviving main house and front gate were further designated National Important Cultural Properties in 1978 — the first residential buildings in Tokyo to receive the designation — as exceptionally well-preserved examples of upper-class mid-early-modern housing.
