Saiin Kasuga Shrine traces its origin to the early Heian period, when Emperor Junna's detached palace stood nearby: the Kasuga deity was invited here from Nara to serve as its guardian. The Hoso Stone, shown only on the 1st, 11th and 15th of each month, has been credited since Heian times with healing illness and injury. The Kanrai Shrine within the grounds is venerated for safe travel, and stroking the Nagi Stone in front of it is said to ensure you return home safely — which makes this a good stop before a long journey.
