Otonashinotaki

📍 Kyoto

Otonashi Falls lies upstream on the Ritsu River, behind Raigo-in. Legend has it that the priest Shoo, worried that the sound of the falls was disturbing the chanting of shomyo, silenced it with an incantation — which is where the name, the soundless falls, comes from. In fact the water slides down the face of the rock like fine white thread, and so makes no noise.

📸 Best photo spotA slightly slower shutter (or just a few extra shots) captures the flow more smoothly — wipe your lens first to avoid spray.
