Otaki

📍 Kyoto

Otaki is the largest waterfall in the district and the source of the Tawara River, a tributary of the Uji within the Yodo system. Clear water rising in the Jubu range comes down here and settles into the landscape around it. The falls enshrine the deity Otaki Daimyojin, and at the festival each 1 September a rite is performed in which eels given sake to drink are released into the plunge pool.

📸 Best photo spotA slightly slower shutter (or just a few extra shots) captures the flow more smoothly — wipe your lens first to avoid spray.
