Osumikurumazukakofun

Osumi Kurumazuka Kofun is a square-front, square-back burial mound built in the early 5th century, the middle Kofun period, also known as Chikonjiyama Kofun. It runs 66 metres end to end: the front section 18 metres wide and 1.5 metres high, the rear section 36 metres to a side and 4.5 metres high. A rectangular moat is thought to have surrounded it, and the burial chamber is presumed to have been either a vertical stone chamber or a clay-encased coffin. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1974. Osumi Minamizuka Kofun, lying alongside it to the west, matches it in shape and size — two moated mounds of the same form side by side, an arrangement rarely found anywhere in Japan.
