Obakusanmanpukuji Temple
📍 KyotoManpukuji on Mount Obaku is the head temple of the Obaku school of Zen, founded in 1661 by Ingen, a Chinese monk who came to Japan in the early Edo period. The grounds are lined with enormous halls built in Chinese style, and the effect is genuinely foreign. You can encounter that continental culture directly here — in fucha ryori, the Chinese-style vegetarian cuisine, and in bonbai, the sutras chanted in Tang pronunciation.
