Minami Shinkyoji, in the Daigokuden area of Kaide, is a Nichiren temple and the centre of a community that converted wholesale at the end of the Kamakura period, when the priest Nichizo preached here and every villager took up the Nichiren teaching. Minami Shinkyoji and Kita Shinkyoji were originally a single temple standing on the site of the present Kita Shinkyoji; this half was moved here when a seminary was opened. The main hall and founder's hall, built in the early Edo period, are designated cultural properties of Kyoto Prefecture.
