Mimurotoji Temple

Mimurotoji stands halfway up Mount Myojo, one of the peaks in the range north of the Uji River. Founded in the Nara period, it is the tenth site of the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage. In the grounds are the main hall, rebuilt in the Edo period, an Amida hall enshrining a Heian-period Amida triad, and a three-storey pagoda also of the Edo period. The treasure hall, which holds a Shaka Nyorai image said to date from the Kamakura period, opens to the public on the 17th of each month. On the south side of the grounds a garden opens out with 20,000 azaleas in May and 10,000 hydrangeas in June.
