Makejinja Shrine

Makejinja Shrine

📍 Kyoto

Make Shrine is of ancient founding and is listed in the Engishiki as a myojin taisha, a shrine of the highest rank. In 1079 Emperor Shirakawa visited and granted it a plaque naming it the first shrine of Funai. In the Edo period it served as a prayer site for the Koide lords of Sonobe domain. The buildings all date from the Edo period or later, and the thatched roofs over the main hall and its two auxiliary shrines give the grounds a settled, genuinely sacred atmosphere.
