Kumano Nyakuoji Shrine is one of the three Kumano shrines of Kyoto. Its sacred nagi tree is said to have been used for purification by those setting out on pilgrimage to Kumano in Kishu or to Ise. It is still venerated today for felling every hardship in one's path — a play on the tree's name. In the municipal cemetery on the summit of Mount Nyakuoji behind the shrine lie the graves of Niijima Jo, founder of Doshisha University, among others.
