Kontaiji Temple

Kontaiji Temple

📍 Kyoto

Kontaiji is an old temple on Mount Jubu, founded 1,300 years ago; at the height of the Heian period more than fifty buildings are said to have stood here. War fire in the Kamakura period took nearly all of them, and only the multi-treasure pagoda now carries anything of that time. The quiet grounds hold the halls that were later rebuilt, and the temple keeps the feel of a still mountain retreat.
