Known familiarly as Kurodani-san, Konkai Komyoji is a head temple of the Pure Land school. It stands where Honen built his first hermitage, and in the last years of the shogunate it served as headquarters for Matsudaira Katamori, lord of Aizu and Protector of Kyoto — which makes it the birthplace of the Shinsengumi. During special openings you can see the Tiger Room in the great abbot's hall, the stroll garden Shiun-no-Niwa, and a garden called the Path of Connection created in 2012. In the founder's hall are a Monju Bosatsu attributed to Unkei and the Kibi Kannon, an Important Cultural Property.
