Kiyomizudera, famous the world over for its stage, was founded in 778 by the priest Enchin. The main hall, a National Treasure, is built out over the cliff on its scaffold of pillars, framed by cherry blossom and new green in spring and by maples in autumn, and the view over the city from it is superb. The grounds hold many cultural properties besides, among them the inner hall and the Amida hall.
