Iwayaji is said to have been founded in the Nara period, with Fudo Myoo as its principal image and the monk Gyoki as its founder. Known familiarly as O-Fudo-san, it preserves a 400-year-old illustrated scroll depicting the legend of the demon-slaying on Mount Oe, which is shown to the public each 18 August.
