Itanamihachimanjinja Shrine

📍 Kyoto

Itanami Hachiman Shrine is said to have been founded in the mid-Heian period; the present buildings are shinmei-zukuri, rebuilt in 1834. It enshrines Homudawake — Emperor Ojin — together with Okinagatarashihime. Two seated wooden figures of female deities from the Heian period survive here, both Important Cultural Properties, though they are not open to view.

📸 Best photo spotShoot straight through the torii gate to capture the shrine's signature red color and sense of depth.
