Genkoji is now a branch temple of the Tenryuji line of Rinzai Zen, formally Tokiwazan Genkoji, with Jizo Bosatsu as its principal image. It holds the Tokiwa Jizo, one of the six Jizo of the Kyoto pilgrimage — a tradition running back some 800 years. The observance falls on 22 and 23 August each year and draws a large number of worshippers. Those who visit on those days are said to be protected from epidemic and granted good fortune for the year ahead.
