Anaoji is the 21st site of the Saigoku pilgrimage. Its main hall holds a life-size wooden reclining Buddha said to heal all manner of illness — the 'rubbing Buddha,' which draws steady devotion. The garden in the grounds is said to date from the late Muromachi period and is counted among the notable gardens of Tanba, designated a cultural property of Kyoto Prefecture; in its stillness you get a genuine sense of wabi and sabi.
