War Memorial of Korea

A large memorial covering the full sweep of Korea's military history, with the Korean War at its center — but the real draw is the lineup of full-scale fighter jets, tanks, a submarine, and naval guns outdoors. Opened in 1994 on the former site of the Army headquarters, which is why the Ministry of National Defense sits nearby.

The most powerful hall is the Korean War room, laying out daily life and military developments before, during, and after the conflict. The memorial to the 22 nations that sent forces, and the sculpture inscribed with letters from families separated by war, move many visitors deeply.

Honest tips: indoor exhibits are free, but the scale demands at least two to three hours to do it justice. For families with kids the outdoor weapons are the real hit, far more than the indoor displays. A changing-of-guard ceremony with a bugler runs daily at noon, and it is closed Mondays, so plan around that. It is a five-minute walk from Samgakji station, so pairing it with the National Museum of Korea in a single day is feasible.
