Sungkyunkwan Myeongnyundang

Myeongnyundang, the central lecture hall of Sungkyunkwan, Joseon's foremost national institution of higher learning.

Sungkyunkwan served as both a school and a shrine, functioning as the highest seat of learning in Joseon for teaching Confucian classics and training the kingdom's future officials. Myeongnyundang was the actual lecture hall where scholars studied and researched, a place that even crown princes passed through. Its name, "Myeongnyun," means "to illuminate the ethics of human society."

In the courtyard stands a ginkgo tree over 400 years old, designated Natural Monument No. 59, drawing visitors with the sight of a venerable old tree beside a historic hall. It's especially known for its beauty in autumn, when golden ginkgo leaves set off the traditional architecture.

The area today remains a quiet space where you can take in Confucian culture and traditional architecture together, offering a different kind of historical stroll from Seoul's grand palaces.

Open year-round; hours are 09:00-18:00 (Mar-Oct) and 09:00-17:00 (Nov-Feb), with parking available.
