Seongsu-dong (Seoul's Brooklyn)

📍 Seoul

Long before the cafes, Seongsu was Korea's largest hub for handmade shoes, built up during the 1960s industrial boom and packed with leather and shoemaking factories. The Yeonmujang-gil shoemakers' street formed as craftsmen who'd built a reputation for custom 'salon shoes' in Myeongdong gathered here, and at its peak the area made over 70% of Korea's handmade shoes.

But manufacturing contracted after the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and factories closed one by one, leaving the neighborhood increasingly run-down. Then in the 2010s, young artists and designers started moving in, drawn by cheap rent, opening vintage-style cafes inside old warehouses like 'Daelim Changgo' — and that's how today's 'Seongsu Cafe Street' was born.

Honest heads-up: as the cafe scene took off, rents shot up, and local shop owners say the area's original handmade-shoe workshops are now struggling under rising rents and a shrinking workforce. It's a textbook case of gentrification — becoming a 'hot spot' has come at the cost of pushing out the original industry.

Local tip: Yeonmujang-gil still has real working shoe workshops alongside the cafes, and some even offer custom-fitting experiences — if you have time, go beyond the cafes and explore the workshop alleys too.

The street itself is free and open 24 hours; cafe hours typically run 11am-10pm. A 5-10 minute walk from Seongsu Station Exit 3 (Line 2).
