Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs

Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs

📍 Seoul

The Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs are a cluster of burial mounds for kings and nobles from Baekje's Hanseong period.

A survey conducted under Japanese colonial rule reported roughly 300 tomb mounds spread across the Seokchon-dong and Garak-dong area, but urban development later reduced what remains today to only the western section. Even so, excavations since the 1970s have confirmed more than 30 tombs, including seven large stone-mound tombs along with wooden coffin tombs and jar burials.

The largest, Tomb No. 3, is a three-tiered stepped stone-mound tomb measuring 50.8m wide and 4.5m high, believed to be the tomb of King Geunchogo of Baekje. Its stepped stone-mound structure resembles Goguryeo tomb styles — a fascinating physical trace of the historical account that the Baekje royal family migrated south from Goguryeo.

Since 2015, further surveys centered on a square platform base have been carried out by the Baekje Museum of Hanseong. Visited together with the nearby Mongchon Toseong and Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortress, it offers a well-rounded encounter with the traces of the Hanseong Baekje era, when Baekje was centered along the Han River.
