Sanbokdoro

Sanbok means "mountainside," and Sanbokdoro refers to roads built at the very top of developed hillside slopes.

The first Sanbokdoro connecting hillside communities opened in October 1964, running 1,820m from in front of Maryknoll Hospital in Daecheong-dong, Jung-gu, to the entrance of Choryang-dong, Dong-gu — and similar roads soon spread across Busan.

These roads let visitors see both hidden stories and beautiful scenery tucked into the hillsides. Winding along the mountainside, Sanbokdoro carries the lived history of modern Busan — the everyday lives of Korean War refugees who settled these steep slopes and built their communities there.
